Babich Family Estates Individual Vineyard Wines

Each year when we harvest our Family Estate vineyards we notice that particular wines exhibit distinctive and unique qualities that reflect their growing environment. In 2009 we started an Individual Vineyards Programme that is designed to capture these differing qualities by giving very special attention to selected parcels of fruit that clearly demonstrate the effect of the vineyard site on the wine style. This programme has resulted in the release of four new wines (all Sauvignon Blanc) from the 2009 vintage which will go into the new Babich Family Estates Individual Vineyard range as per below:

Babich Family Estates Individual Vineyard – Wakefield Downs Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009

This wine from the 42 hectare Wakefield Downs Vineyard situated on natural terraces overlooking the Awatere River demonstrates pure minerality on the palate which is typical for wines produced on this particular vineyard.

Babich Family Estates Individual Vineyard – Cowslip Valley Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009

This wine from the 66 Hectare Cowslip Valley Vineyard in the Waihopai Valley is grown on a cool and sometimes frost prone site with moderately fertile silt soils overlying deep layers of free draining gravel. Good body and complex flavours on the palate are typical for wines grown on this site.

Babich Family Estates Individual Vineyard – Headwaters Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Situated on the banks near the confluence of the Waihopai and Wairau Rivers the 25 hectare Headwaters Vineyard soils tend to be a mixture of river silts interspersed with large river stones. This wine exhibits crisp flinty capsicum flavours.

Babich Family Estates Individual Vineyard – Headwaters Organic Block Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Our Family Vineyards in Fernhill, Hawke’s Bay were the first in New Zealand to achieve sustainable registration. With their ongoing commitment to protect the environment through only implementing sustainable practises in all of our vineyards, it was a logical progression to move to the next step and investigate the benefits of an organic approach to viticulture. The Headwaters five hectare Organic Block (within the 25 hectare Headwaters Vineyard) is fully certified and is farmed in compliance with organic standards. This crisp dry Sauvignon Blanc is produced from grapes grown on the organic block in Marlborough and vinified in compliance with organic standards.
